Special Needs

All children love to put on a uniform, to be part of a team, enjoy the great outdoors and feel the thrill of friendly competition playing soccer, “the beautiful game”.  The Pickering Soccer Club provides those opportunities to > 4000 soccer players, and reaches almost 20% of the local population through the players, coaches, referees, and countless volunteers.  However, it is clear to us that there are many children and youth in our community who want to play soccer but are unwilling, or feel unable, to participate in the programs we currently offer.  Therefore, we have partnered with Special Olympics Ontario to offer “grassroots” soccer programs for those in our community with special needs.

Special Olympics is founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports.  Special Olympics is an unprecedented global movement which, through quality sports training and competition, improves the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and, in turn, the lives of everyone they touch.

Who is eligible?

Our program is offered to local youth with special needs aged 4-18 according to Special Olympics qualification criteria.

How does the program operate?

The program is run by volunteers.  As a parent/guardian, you are welcome to participate but are not required to.   We try to keep our athlete:coach ratio at 1:1 or close to it.  Players are given individual attention appropriate for their abilities.  The #1 rule is FUN!  We try to arrange for scrimmages/games each session, but it depends on the number and ability of the athletes.
